AI Optimization (AIO)
Optimizing content so AI assistants cite it as a source.
AI Optimization (AIO) is the practice of structuring content so AI systems — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — surface or cite it when answering user questions. Different from traditional SEO because the "ranking" is an inclusion in a generated answer, not a position on a results page.
AIO best practices overlap with SEO but emphasize different signals: clear, declarative answers up front; named entities and citations; structured data (schema.org); semantically chunked sections that LLMs can quote; and authoritative tone backed by data or links.
AIO matters because a growing share of search queries — Google estimated 40%+ by 2025 — are answered by AI directly, without users clicking through. If your content isn't cited, the user gets the answer and never sees you.
